<h1>The Web Is Testing a Price Tag for AI Access</h1> <h2>The odd pattern</h2> <p>The web has long exchanged content for referral traffic. AI systems can consume information without sending a visit. Cloudflare's <a href="https://developers.cloudflare.com/ai-crawl-control/features/pay-per-crawl/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Pay Per Crawl documentation</a> describes a model in which a site sets a price and returns HTTP 402 when a crawler has not supplied payment intent. Its newer <a href="https://blog.cloudflare.com/monetization-gateway/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">monetization gateway</a> extends the idea to resources beyond crawling.</p> <p>A status code that spent decades mostly unused is becoming a possible checkout counter for machines. The experiment places a price between the two blunt alternatives of free crawling and a closed wall.</p> <h2>Why it showed up</h2> <p>Blocking every AI bot sacrifices discovery. Allowing every bot creates no direct compensation. Pricing offers a middle path, but only when the buyer can be identified and values the content enough to pay.</p> <p>Identity is the difficult part. Cloudflare says <a href="https://blog.cloudflare.com/agentic-internet-bot-report/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">more than one-third of crawler activity</a> on its network comes from mixed-use bots whose purpose cannot be separated cleanly. One crawler may support conventional search, AI answers and other functions. A publisher that charges or blocks it may affect all of those channels at once.</p> <p>The payment unit is also unsettled. A literal price per page is easy to describe but may be awkward for frequently updated feeds, archives or high-volume retrieval. Bundles, subscriptions and usage caps may fit machine demand better.</p> <h2>What it might mean</h2> <p>The market is unlikely to price every page equally. Fresh, exclusive, structured or decision-critical data has more machine value than commodity commentary. Publishers with unique datasets can test access economics; those selling undifferentiated prose may discover that the clearing price is near zero.</p> <p>Pricing without demand evidence can become a self-imposed invisibility tax. Before setting terms, a publisher needs to know which resources agents request, how often those resources change and whether access produces citations, referrals or revenue. The right decision may differ by content class.</p> <p>The larger change is that web access is becoming a commercial product in its own right. That does not guarantee a healthy market. Crawler identity, measurement and bargaining power remain unresolved. HTTP 402 supplies a mechanism, not a business model.</p> <h2>Chart / data note</h2> <p>A content-level matrix can connect crawler identity, requests, successful fetches, update frequency, referrals, observed citations, proposed price and paid acceptance. Daily detail is useful for breaking content, with monthly totals for the wider catalogue. Mixed-use traffic should remain explicitly unclassified where intent cannot be established; assigning it to one purpose would create false precision.</p>
